San Diego Zoo is a strong full-day choice for giant pandas, dense marquee habitats, and included transport in Balboa Park; it works best if you arrive at opening and are prepared for steep, hilly walking.
Buy the Value Day pass
Purchase the official 1-Day Value Days Pass online for designated dates from US$73 adult (US$63 child), or the US$78 Any Day Pass if your date is not eligible; neither requires a reservation and online tickets bypass the ticket-sales line.
MoreArrive before opening
Be at the Main Entrance turnstiles at opening—typically 9 a.m., subject to the date-specific schedule—and go straight to Panda Ridge before its queue builds.
MoreAllow six to eight hours
A satisfying first visit needs six to eight hours for Panda Ridge, Africa Rocks, elephants, Lost Forest, the included 35-minute Guided Bus Tour, and Skyfari.
MoreUse mobility help for hills
Enter at 2920 Zoo Drive and use the accessible-route map, ADA shuttle, or first-come wheelchair/ECV rentals if steep grades are a concern; parking is US$16 per standard vehicle per day.
MoreSan Diego Zoo is a 100-acre nonprofit wildlife park in Balboa Park at 2920 Zoo Drive, developed from animal displays left after the 1915–16 Panama–California Exposition and established on permanent grounds in the early 1920s. It now cares for more than 12,000 animals across 680-plus species and subspecies, with major work in conservation, animal care, science, botany, and education. This is the compact, hilly urban San Diego Zoo—not the separate Safari Park in Escondido—with dense animal exhibits, gardens, giant pandas, primates, elephants, and included transport attractions.
It merits most of a day for travelers who want a major, exhibit-rich zoo: highlights include Denny Sanford Panda Ridge, Africa Rocks, Elephant Odyssey, the Lost Forest ape and monkey areas, plus an included narrated bus tour and Skyfari aerial tram. Choose it over the Safari Park for more species in a walkable city setting and easy pairing with Balboa Park; skip or moderate expectations if you dislike managed wildlife habitats, need an entirely flat outing, want a quiet holiday visit, or have only 90 minutes.
Before you go
Choose the San Diego Zoo at 2920 Zoo Drive in Balboa Park if you want a dense, walkable-in-the-city zoo day with giant pandas, Africa Rocks, elephants, primates, gardens, included bus/tram transport, and the option to pair it with Balboa Park. Choose the separate Safari Park in Escondido instead for large savanna views and safari-style add-ons. The Zoo is hilly, so it is not ideal for visitors seeking a fully flat day without mobility assistance.
No timed general-admission reservation is currently required. Buy online before arrival at https://tickets.sandiegozoo.org/webstore/shop/ViewItems.aspx?C=sdztp&CG=webstoresdz: online ticket holders can bypass the ticket-sales line, though everyone still uses the entry turnstiles. General admission is continuously sold and is not normally a sellout concern. Reserve limited-capacity upgraded experiences, especially early-morning panda or other special tours, before building the rest of your day around them.
Buy the 1-Day Pass—Value Days if your visit date is designated a Value Day: it is US$73 for ages 12+ and US$63 for ages 3–11. Otherwise buy the 1-Day Pass—Any Day, US$78 for ages 12+ and US$68 for ages 3–11. Both include admission, the Guided Bus Tour, Skyfari Aerial Tram, and regularly scheduled presentations/activities, subject to availability. The Any Day pass is valid for any day within one year of purchase; Value Days are limited to designated Value Days within one year. Children age 2 and under enter free.
Consider the US$130 adult / US$120 child 2-Visit Pass only if you will make two visits within one year—either two visits to the Zoo, or one Zoo visit and one Safari Park visit. It is non-transferable. For a single Zoo day, the 1-Day Pass is the better fit.
Arrive 20–30 minutes before the published opening time and be ready at the turnstiles when the Zoo opens. Opening is typically 9 a.m., but hours are date-specific and can change seasonally or for events; confirm your date at https://zoo.sandiegozoo.org/plan-your-visit. Allow 6–8 hours for a satisfying first visit; 4–5 hours works for a selective visit, while 2–3 hours is only enough for a highlights run. The first 60–90 minutes usually have the shortest waits at Panda Ridge, Skyfari, and the bus tour.
Go directly to Denny Sanford Panda Ridge at opening, before the line builds. Panda viewing is not guaranteed: animals may be in private holding areas for care or other operational reasons. After pandas, use Skyfari East-to-West once it opens at 10 a.m, then explore Northern Frontier, Elephant Odyssey, and Africa Rocks from the upper/west side rather than climbing uphill from the entrance.
