Springdale and Zion National Park
Base · 2 days
Utah’s essential first-stop landscape: the main canyon delivers even without a major hike, while serious walkers can fill two full days. Stay in Springdale if early shuttle starts and easy evenings matter; it costs more, but saves friction.
Moab
Base · 2–3 days
The only sensible base for Arches, Canyonlands’ Island in the Sky district and Dead Horse Point. Give it three nights minimum: one for Arches, one for Canyonlands and overlooks, and one for a trail, bike ride or river day.
Torrey and Capitol Reef
Base · 1–2 days
A quieter, more textured stop than the blockbuster parks, with Fruita orchards, the Waterpocket Fold and enough hiking to justify two nights. Torrey is tiny and dining is thin, but that is part of the reset between Moab and the southwest.
Escalante, Boulder and Highway 12
Base · 1–2 days
The stretch to slow down for rather than rush through: Highway 12, slickrock, canyon hikes and unusually dark skies. Base in Escalante or Boulder for two nights if you want the scenery to feel like a place rather than a transfer day.
Bryce Canyon and Panguitch
Short stop · 1 day
Bryce’s hoodoo amphitheaters are compact enough for one full day, especially if you walk below the rim instead of just photographing overlooks. Panguitch is the practical lodging fallback when Bryce-area rooms are inflated.
Salt Lake City and the Wasatch Front
Base · 1–2 days
Use it as the functional gateway for the airport, Utah’s best food range, museums and easy access to mountain resorts. It works for a first or last night, or as the value-minded base for skiing several areas without resort-town rates.
Park City, Deer Valley and Heber Valley
Base · 1–4 days
A polished, walkable ski and summer mountain base with serious resort infrastructure, restaurants and easy Salt Lake access. Pick it for a Park City-focused stay, not as a launchpad for southern Utah.
Kanab
A useful, lower-cost hub between Zion, Bryce and Grand Staircase country when Springdale prices get silly. It trades immediate scenery and shuttle convenience for flexible lodging and easier road-trip logistics.
Ogden and the Northern Wasatch
The less manicured alternative to Park City, with a handsome historic core and strong access to Snowbasin, Powder Mountain and Ogden Valley. Choose it when terrain and value matter more than resort polish.
St. George, Snow Canyon and Cedar City
St. George is the serviceable warm-weather base for Snow Canyon, golf and winter sun; Cedar City is the better choice for Brian Head and seasonal Cedar Breaks access. Neither replaces a stay near Zion, but both are useful on a longer southwest Utah drive.
Logan and Bear Lake
Northern Utah’s worthwhile summer detour: Cache Valley, a lively college-town base and Bear Lake’s improbably turquoise water. Keep it for a second trip or a summer lake-focused itinerary, not a one-week Mighty 5 run.
Essential southern Utah road trip
7 daysSpringdale and Zion National Park (2 days) → Bryce Canyon and Panguitch (1 day) → Escalante, Boulder and Highway 12 (1 day) → Torrey and Capitol Reef (1 day) → Moab (2 days)
The right first Mighty 5 trip if you want the headline landscapes without treating every day as a long transfer. Zion and Moab get the time; Highway 12 is deliberately kept as part of the trip, not a drive to rush through.

10 daysSalt Lake City and the Wasatch Front (1 day) → Park City, Deer Valley and Heber Valley (1 day) → Moab (3 days) → Torrey and Capitol Reef (2 days) → Bryce Canyon and Panguitch (1 day) → Springdale and Zion National Park (2 days)
For travelers who want a little city and mountain time before committing to the southern parks. Arrive in Salt Lake City and ideally fly out of Las Vegas after Zion; backtracking to Salt Lake wastes a day.
Plan this routeDeep Utah for hikers and photographers
14 daysSalt Lake City and the Wasatch Front (2 days) → Park City, Deer Valley and Heber Valley (2 days) → Moab (3 days) → Torrey and Capitol Reef (2 days) → Escalante, Boulder and Highway 12 (2 days) → Bryce Canyon and Panguitch (1 day) → Springdale and Zion National Park (2 days)
A proper pace for people who will actually hike, shoot at good light and absorb bad-weather days without wrecking the plan. Escalante gets two nights because Highway 12 country is the place most rushed itineraries wrongly reduce to a windshield transfer.
Plan this routeWinter ski-and-city break
6 daysSalt Lake City and the Wasatch Front (2 days) → Park City, Deer Valley and Heber Valley (4 days)
The cleanest winter Utah trip: use Salt Lake for food, museums and a Cottonwood-canyon ski day, then stay in Park City for a car-light resort finish. Do not dilute this with southern parks unless you can add several more nights.
