Memphis and the Mississippi Riverfront
Base · 2–3 nights
Come for blues, soul, barbecue, Graceland, Stax and the National Civil Rights Museum—not polished streetscapes. Give it two full days; the major history sites are not quick stops.
Nashville
Base · 3–4 nights
The state’s best base for live music, songwriters’ rooms, hot chicken and late nights. See Broadway once, then spend the rest of the trip in Music Row, East Nashville, Germantown, 12 South or The Gulch.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Base · 2 nights
Tennessee’s essential outdoor stop: forest hikes, streams, historic cabins, Cades Cove and high-elevation views. Stay in Townsend for quiet and easy Cades Cove access; use Gatlinburg only if walkable lodging and restaurant choice outweigh traffic and strip development.
Chattanooga and Lookout Mountain
Base · 2 nights
A practical two-night city break with a good riverfront, aquarium, compact downtown and immediate access to Lookout Mountain. The headline attractions are touristy and ticket-heavy, but the city is still Tennessee’s most balanced urban-and-outdoors stop.
Knoxville and the Tennessee River
Base · 2 nights
Choose Knoxville over Pigeon Forge if you want a real, walkable East Tennessee city with food, beer, music and an easy riverfront rather than resort-strip entertainment. It also works well before or after a Smokies stay.
Pigeon Forge and Sevierville
Base · 3 nights
This is the family-entertainment corridor: Dollywood, water parks, dinner theaters, outlets and cabins. It is worth an intentional stay for theme-park families, but a poor base if hiking and quiet mountain time are the real priority.
Franklin and Leiper’s Fork
A polished, easy break from Nashville for Civil War history, Main Street browsing and rolling Middle Tennessee countryside. Treat it as a half- or full-day Nashville excursion rather than a necessary overnight.
Lynchburg and South-Central Whiskey Country
Go for the Jack Daniel Distillery, the cave spring and a focused Tennessee-whiskey outing. Lynchburg itself is small, so make this a Nashville day trip with a designated driver rather than a standalone destination.
Cumberland Plateau and Waterfall Country
Base · 2 nights
Base in Cookeville or near Fall Creek Falls for gorge walks, waterfalls and less-developed scenery between the major cities. It is Tennessee’s best detour for hikers, but it needs a car and some weather flexibility.
Northeast Tennessee and the Appalachian High Country
Johnson City, Bristol and Roan Mountain offer a cooler, more Appalachian alternative to the Smokies: mountain drives, Appalachian Trail access and roots-music history. Save it for a second trip or a longer one-way route; it is too far to tack onto a short Memphis–Nashville itinerary.
Nashville long weekend, with one deliberate detour
4 nights / 5 daysNashville (4 nights)
For a first Tennessee taste centered on live music, food and evenings out. Spend one day on downtown institutions, one in the neighborhoods, and use a rental car for either Franklin and Leiper’s Fork or Lynchburg and South-Central Whiskey Country; do not dilute this with a rushed Smokies or Memphis add-on.
Plan this routeClassic Tennessee spine
9 nights / 10 daysMemphis and the Mississippi Riverfront (2 nights) → Nashville (3 nights) → Chattanooga and Lookout Mountain (2 nights) → Great Smoky Mountains National Park (2 nights)
The sensible first statewide road trip: Memphis for music and civil-rights history, Nashville for nights out, Chattanooga for a compact city-and-scenery reset, then the Smokies. Stay in Townsend if hiking and Cades Cove matter; choose Gatlinburg only if you value restaurants and walkable lodging over calm.
Plan this routeMusic, waterfall country and East Tennessee without a forced march
14 nights / 15 daysMemphis and the Mississippi Riverfront (3 nights) → Nashville (3 nights) → Cumberland Plateau and Waterfall Country (2 nights) → Chattanooga and Lookout Mountain (2 nights) → Knoxville and the Tennessee River (2 nights) → Great Smoky Mountains National Park (2 nights)
For travelers who want the major music cities but refuse to spend the whole trip on interstates and tourist strips. The Plateau earns its place for gorge walks and waterfalls; Knoxville provides a real-city counterweight before the mountains. Skip the Plateau only if hiking is not part of the plan, then give the extra time to Memphis and the Smokies.
Plan this routeEast Tennessee family base: aquarium, Dollywood and the park
7 nights / 8 daysChattanooga and Lookout Mountain (2 nights) → Pigeon Forge and Sevierville (3 nights) → Great Smoky Mountains National Park (2 nights)
A practical family route that treats Pigeon Forge as an intentional entertainment stop rather than pretending it is a mountain town. Start with Chattanooga’s aquarium and riverfront, give Dollywood and the resort corridor their own time, then move to Townsend or Gatlinburg for actual park days rather than commuting through Parkway traffic.
