Arapahoe Basin is a standout for strong skiers and riders seeking high-alpine, above-treeline Colorado terrain and a long spring season, not a conventional resort village. It works best if you are comfortable with altitude, exposure and weather-driven lift or terrain closures.
Buy lift tickets online early
Choose and buy your operating date through A-Basin before travel, as daily-ticket quantities can be capped and earlier purchases cost less.
MoreUse the official ticket calendar
Do not rely on walk-up availability; if your date is sold out, switch dates, use an eligible existing pass, arrange a legitimate Friends & Family ticket, or check Snowstang inventory.
MorePlan for winter road delays
From Denver, use the I-70/Eisenhower Tunnel approach when conditions warrant and allow substantial extra time for traffic, chain restrictions and Loveland Pass weather.
MoreChoose terrain to match ability
Treat this as an advanced-focused mountain—only 7% is easiest terrain, while exposed expert zones can require hiking and open only after avalanche control.

Arapahoe Basin Ski Area (“A-Basin” or “The Legend”) is a high-alpine, mountain-first ski resort on U.S. Forest Service land beside US-6 at Loveland Pass, 15 miles east of Dillon. Founded in 1946 by former ski racers and 10th Mountain Division veterans, it has grown from a rope tow into a 1,428-acre ski area with nine lifts, a 10,520-foot base and a 13,050-foot summit. It is built for access to the Continental Divide rather than a resort village, with steep above-treeline terrain, a long snow-dependent season, and summer activities including scenic lift rides and guided via ferrata routes.
A-Basin is a standout for capable skiers and riders seeking serious, characterful Colorado terrain—especially Pallavicini, East Wall, Steep Gullies, The Beavers and Montezuma Bowl—plus expansive high-alpine views. Spring is especially rewarding for preserved snow and the sociable Beach tailgating scene, while summer offers a genuinely high-alpine via ferrata. Skip it, or make it a lesson-focused visit, if you are a nervous beginner, struggle with altitude or exposure, or want ski-in/ski-out lodging, nightlife, shopping, and an easy resort-village experience; only 7% of terrain is rated easiest.
Before you go
Yes. Buy a Full-Day Lift Ticket online before your selected ski date; A-Basin says ticket quantities may be capped, advance purchases cost less, and day-of availability is not guaranteed. If the official calendar is sold out, choose another date, use a valid A-Basin/Ikon pass, obtain a Friends & Family ticket from a passholder, or check Snowstang inventory—do not arrive expecting a walk-up ticket.
Full-day lift-ticket prices vary by date, with no published fixed adult price. Published 2026–27 alternatives include the A-Basin Any Day Pack from $359, Midweek Pack from $229, unrestricted season pass from $699, and Midweek Pass from $539. Check the live checkout calendar before purchase: an official page has also advertised a 3-day Any Day option at $269.
Children age 4 and under ski and ride free, but still need a pass collected from Guest Services. Do not assume the past Kids Ski Free promotion for ages 12 and under will recur; it was announced only for December 6–12, 2025.
It can work for a lesson or mixed-ability day, with the Molly Hogan learning area, two carpets and a learner lift by Mountain Goat Plaza. But it is not an ideal destination for nervous first-timers: only 7% of terrain is rated easiest, while 49% is most difficult and 24% extreme. Beginners should start at Molly Hogan and consider booking instruction.
Plan a full 6–7 hours on site. Arrive 45–60 minutes before lifts open if you need rentals, ticket/pass collection, lessons, or weekend parking. Winter lot hours are currently listed as 7am–6pm.
No reservation is currently required according to the main site, but A-Basin required vehicle reservations on Saturdays and Sundays from 6am–1pm during part of the 2025–26 season. Check the resort's parking announcement for your exact ski date before driving, particularly on weekends and in spring. Overnight parking and camping are not allowed.
