Chiang Mai
Base · 2–5 days
The indispensable base for temples, Northern Thai food, markets and the province's easiest logistics. Stay in the Old City for walkability; choose the riverside for quieter streets or Nimman for cafés and design hotels, not historic atmosphere.
Suthep–Doi Suthep–Doi Pui
The quick mountain escape west of the city: Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, viewpoints and forest roads in one half-day or day. Go early for clearer views and fewer tour buses; this is a classic outing, not wilderness.
Mae Rim and Mon Jam
Base · 2 days
An easy northwest countryside break with gardens, waterfalls, ridge views and resorts. Mon Jam is scenic but heavily shaped by Thai weekend tourism, so it works best midweek or as an overnight rather than a photo-stop sprint.
Mae Kampong
Base · 2 days
A wooded creekside village east of Chiang Mai with homestays, coffee and enough atmosphere to justify a night away from the city. Midday crowds flatten it; sleep there or arrive early rather than treating it as a lunch stop.
Chiang Dao
Base · 2 days
The best near-city mountain base, built around limestone Doi Chiang Dao, caves, temples, birdlife and guided hikes. Give it two nights; it is far more rewarding than trying to see it on a rushed return trip from Chiang Mai.
Doi Inthanon and Chom Thong
Base · 2 days
Thailand's highest mountain and the practical southern gateway for cloud forest, waterfalls, the royal pagodas and Kew Mae Pan. The summit itself is underwhelming; come for the ridge walk and forest, ideally with an overnight nearby.
Mae Chaem
Base · 2 days
A quiet western highland basin of rice terraces, weaving and agricultural villages beyond Doi Inthanon. It needs at least two nights and is strongest when the fields are green or near harvest, not for nightlife or polished resorts.
Mae Wang
A lower-key southwest alternative to the standard Inthanon circuit, with forest roads, waterfalls and small lodges. Choose it for an unhurried nature day rather than headline scenery.
Mae Taeng and the upper Ping valley
A broad outdoor corridor of river valleys, rafting and forest roads on the way north. It is worthwhile for active days and carefully chosen elephant-welfare visits, but avoid riding, shows and forced bathing operations.
Samoeng
A winding agricultural mountain region west of Mae Rim, known for orchards, strawberry farms and the scenic Samoeng loop. It is for confident self-drivers and cyclists who enjoy the road itself, not travelers looking for a dense sight list.
Fang and Doi Ang Khang
Base · 2 days
The province's far-north highland extension, with tea, agricultural projects, flower gardens and genuinely cool-season scenery. It is a separate overnight destination, not a feasible Chiang Mai city day trip.
Intelligent first taste
5 daysChiang Mai (5 days)
For a first visit with no appetite for hotel changes. Use Chiang Mai as the base for the Old City, food markets and temples, then make selective day trips to Suthep–Doi Suthep–Doi Pui, Mae Rim and Mon Jam, or Mae Kampong. Pick Mae Kampong or Doi Inthanon for the final excursion—trying to do both is bad routing.
Plan this routeCity and real mountain time
8 daysChiang Mai (4 days) → Chiang Dao (2 days) → Chiang Mai (2 days)
The strongest first trip for travelers who want more than day-trip mountains. Start with Chiang Mai’s temples, food and one easy outing—Mae Kampong or Mae Rim and Mon Jam—then move to Chiang Dao for caves, limestone scenery and a guided hike or birding day. Return to the city rather than forcing a long transfer straight to the airport.
Plan this routeSouthern highland loop
9 daysChiang Mai (3 days) → Doi Inthanon and Chom Thong (2 days) → Mae Chaem (2 days) → Chiang Mai (2 days)
For hikers, forest people and travelers who prefer a proper mountain loop to a rushed Doi Inthanon bus day. Give the city three days, overnight near Inthanon for Kew Mae Pan if it is open, then cross to Mae Chaem for terraces and quieter village life. It needs a driver or confident self-drive and a flexible attitude in wet weather.
Plan this routeFar-north road trip
14 daysChiang Mai (4 days) → Mae Kampong (2 days) → Chiang Dao (2 days) → Fang and Doi Ang Khang (2 days) → Mae Rim and Mon Jam (2 days) → Chiang Mai (2 days)
For cool-season self-drivers and repeat visitors who want the north and east of the province without turning every day into a transfer. Mae Kampong earns an overnight, Chiang Dao provides the best mountain base, and Fang and Doi Ang Khang are far enough away to deserve two nights. This deliberately skips Doi Inthanon: adding the southwest to this route creates an ugly, road-heavy zigzag.
