Nagano City
Base · 1–3 days
The practical northern base, with Zenkoji as the essential sight and enough food and transport options to make day trips painless. Stay here for temples and logistics, not for a perfectly preserved old-town atmosphere.
Togakushi
A mountain shrine district northwest of Nagano City, known for its cedar-lined approaches, serious forest walking and excellent Togakushi soba. Give it a full day if you want to reach the Upper Shrine rather than rushing through the lower sites.
Yudanaka & Shibu Onsen
Base · 1–2 days
The right overnight base for Jigokudani’s snow monkeys and a traditional onsen ryokan stay. The appeal is the combination of bathing town and mountain setting; the monkeys are wild, so treat sightings as nature rather than a performance.
Matsumoto
Base · 2–3 days
Nagano’s strongest small-city stop: Matsumoto Castle, merchant streets, good soba and sake, and a genuinely useful base for the western mountains. Give the city one full day before using it for Kamikochi, Azumino or Narai.
Kamikochi
Short stop · 1 day
The prefecture’s standout mountain landscape: a high valley built around the Azusa River, Kappabashi and the Hotaka range. Go to walk, linger and watch the light change—not to dash in for one bridge photograph.
Hakuba Valley
Base · 2–4 days
Nagano’s most internationally oriented ski and mountain-sports area, with dramatic Northern Alps views and far more terrain than a quick stop can justify. It is spread across several resort villages, so sleep near the lifts or activity you actually plan to use.
Shiga Kogen
Short stop · 1 day
A sprawling high-altitude plateau for serious ski mileage in winter and cool, quiet hiking in the green season. Choose it for outdoor time, not village strolling: this is a dispersed resort network rather than one walkable town.
Nozawa Onsen
Base · 2 days
A proper hot-spring village wrapped around a substantial ski mountain, with communal bathhouses and steep, characterful lanes. It is the northern choice for people who want snow sports without sleeping in a purpose-built resort.
Obuse
A compact Nagano City day trip for Hokusai, chestnut sweets and traditional streets. It is polished and can be busy, but it delivers more in a half-day than many much larger towns.
Kiso Valley
Base · 2 days
The slow-travel southern spine of Nagano, where cedar forest and the old Nakasendo connect Narai, Kiso-Fukushima and Tsumago. Use Kiso-Fukushima for services, Narai for the most intact streetscape, and Tsumago for an atmospheric overnight and short walks.
Ueda & Bessho Onsen
A quieter east-Nagano pairing of Ueda’s castle-town streets and Bessho’s compact temple-and-onsen village. It is a smart one-night detour for travelers who prefer a lived-in onsen town to a big resort.
Komagane & the Central Alps
A southern add-on centered on the Komagatake Ropeway and the alpine scenery of Senjojiki Cirque. Worth the extra routing for mountain walkers, but too transport-heavy to squeeze into a rushed rail-only first trip.
Northern temples, monkeys and highlands
4 daysNagano City (2 days) → Yudanaka & Shibu Onsen (1 day) → Shiga Kogen (1 day)
The cleanest short first visit: use Nagano City for Zenkoji and either Togakushi or Obuse, then sleep in an onsen town rather than racing back after Jigokudani. Finish in Shiga Kogen only if you will ski, snowshoe or walk; otherwise spend the extra day in Nagano City.
Plan this routeNorth Nagano to Matsumoto first visit
8 daysNagano City (3 days) → Yudanaka & Shibu Onsen (1 day) → Matsumoto (3 days) → Kamikochi (1 day)
A sensible no-car route for temples, an onsen night, castle-town food and serious Alpine scenery. Give Nagano City enough time for Togakushi or Obuse, reserve a full Matsumoto day, and treat Kamikochi as the point of the western half—not an add-on to castle sightseeing.

11 daysNagano City (2 days) → Yudanaka & Shibu Onsen (2 days) → Hakuba Valley (2 days) → Matsumoto (2 days) → Kamikochi (1 day) → Kiso Valley (2 days)
A proper north-to-south Nagano trip for spring through autumn. It gives Hakuba and Kamikochi enough breathing room, then slows down in Kiso rather than pretending Narai and Tsumago are a quick detour from Matsumoto. A car becomes useful from Matsumoto onward, but is not necessary in the north.
Plan this routeSki week with village character
7 daysHakuba Valley (4 days) → Nozawa Onsen (2 days) → Nagano City (1 day)
For skiers who want powder flexibility first and sightseeing second. Spend four nights in Hakuba so weather and lift holds do not wreck the trip, then switch to Nozawa for a more characterful onsen village. Nagano City is a practical final night, not a substitute for sleeping near the slopes.
