Sapporo and Jozankei
Base · 1–3 days
Use Sapporo as the practical first base for soup curry, ramen, beer, nightlife and easy rail connections. Add Jozankei for a mountain onsen night or day trip without committing to a long transfer.
Hakodate and Onuma
Base · 3 days
Hokkaido’s strongest historic city stop: seafood breakfasts, Motomachi’s slopes, Goryokaku and the Mount Hakodate night view all justify two or three nights. Onuma is the easy outdoors counterweight, not a reason to rush Hakodate.
Otaru, Yoichi and the Shakotan Coast
Short stop · 1 day
Come for sushi, old merchant streets and an evening in the canal district; Otaru works as a Sapporo day trip but is better with one night. Yoichi adds whisky and orchards, while the Shakotan-facing coast rewards drivers.
Noboribetsu and Shiraoi
Short stop · 1 day
This is the easy onsen-and-culture stop between Sapporo and Hakodate: sulfurous Hell Valley at Noboribetsu, then Upopoy in Shiraoi for essential Ainu context. Noboribetsu is commercial, but it is efficient and satisfying for one night.
Furano–Biei and Daisetsuzan
Base · 5 days
The classic summer interior combination of flower fields, patchwork farm roads, the Blue Pond and serious alpine terrain. Base in Furano or Asahikawa and rent a car; trying to stitch this together on sparse buses wastes too much time.
Niseko, Kutchan and Lake Toya
Niseko and Kutchan are here for reliable powder and well-developed mountain infrastructure, not for a conventional Japanese-town experience. Pair them with a night at Lake Toya for caldera views and a proper onsen reset.
Kushiro, Lake Akan and Lake Mashu
Base · 3 days
Eastern Hokkaido’s best entry into wetlands, red-crowned cranes, caldera lakes and Ainu culture. Kushiro is mainly a transport and seafood base; stay at Lake Akan when the onsen and lake are the point.
Shiretoko and the Okhotsk Coast
Base · 5 days
Base in Utoro or Rausu for the Five Lakes, wildlife cruises, waterfalls and brown-bear country; Abashiri is the practical drift-ice gateway. Give it several nights because weather cancellations and long driving distances are part of the deal.
Tokachi and Obihiro
Base · 2 days
Come for dairy, pork, sweets, quiet cycling roads and rural Hokkaido rather than headline sights. Obihiro is the useful base for butadon and access to Tokachigawa’s moor hot springs.
Wakkanai, Rishiri and Rebun
Base · 6–7 days
A dedicated far-north trip of sea cliffs, coastal walks and weather-dependent ferries. Rebun is the better hiking island; Rishiri is for the volcanic peak and the cycling loop—do not squeeze either into a wider island circuit.
First Hokkaido by rail: food, onsen and Hakodate
8 days / 7 nightsSapporo and Jozankei (3 days) → Otaru, Yoichi and the Shakotan Coast (1 day) → Noboribetsu and Shiraoi (1 day) → Hakodate and Onuma (3 days)
The sensible first trip for travelers without a car. Start with Sapporo’s food and a Jozankei option, give Otaru a full day rather than a rushed canal photo, break the southbound journey with an onsen night, then give Hakodate enough time for its market, old streets, night view and Onuma.
Plan this routeSummer interior road trip: Furano, Biei and the mountains
9 days / 8 nightsSapporo and Jozankei (2 days) → Otaru, Yoichi and the Shakotan Coast (1 day) → Furano–Biei and Daisetsuzan (5 days) → Sapporo and Jozankei (1 day)
A strong late-June-to-September route for drivers. Do not keep a car in central Sapporo; collect it when leaving. The long Furano–Biei stay gives room for flower fields, Biei’s farm roads and Blue Pond, plus a real Daisetsuzan hiking or ropeway day rather than treating the interior as a string of roadside stops.
Plan this routeEastern Hokkaido wildlife route, properly paced
11 days / 10 nightsKushiro, Lake Akan and Lake Mashu (3 days) → Shiretoko and the Okhotsk Coast (5 days) → Tokachi and Obihiro (2 days) → Sapporo and Jozankei (1 day)
For wildlife, onsen and wide-open landscapes rather than city sightseeing. Use Kushiro as the entry point, stay around Lake Akan for Mashu and Kussharo, then give Shiretoko real weather slack for cruises and the Five Lakes. Finish in Tokachi for dairy, butadon and rural quiet. A rental car is the practical choice outside winter.
Plan this routeFar-north islands: Rebun and Rishiri with a weather buffer
8-9 daysSapporo and Jozankei (1 day) → Wakkanai, Rishiri and Rebun (6-7 days) → Sapporo and Jozankei (1 day)
A dedicated June-to-September trip for hikers and island travelers, not an extension to bolt onto a first visit. Use Wakkanai as the ferry hinge, spend more time on Rebun for coastal walking and Rishiri for the mountain or cycling loop, and retain a buffer before any long-haul connection.
