Bari
Base · 2 days
Puglia’s most useful arrival point and a real port city worth two nights, not just an airport transfer. Bari Vecchia, San Nicola, focaccia and busy evening streets provide the urban counterweight to all the whitewashed villages.
Valle d’Itria
Base · 3 days
The trulli-and-olive-grove core of Puglia, best explored slowly from Martina Franca, Cisternino or a countryside masseria. Use it for white towns, dry-stone lanes and serious butcher-grill dinners; see Alberobello early or late, not as an all-day base.
Lecce
Base · 2–3 days
Salento’s strongest city base: dense Baroque stonework, good restaurants, proper evening life and useful rail links. Stay here for culture and dining, then head to the coast rather than expecting a beach outside the door.
Polignano a Mare and Monopoli
Short stop · 1 day
These neighboring Adriatic towns make the easiest sea-facing stop south of Bari. Go to Polignano for the cliff-and-cove drama, but sleep in Monopoli for the more livable old town, harbor and better dinner-and-base-town rhythm.
Ostuni and the Brindisi coast
Ostuni’s hilltop old town is one of Puglia’s best-looking urban silhouettes, with olive country and Adriatic beaches within driving reach. It is a smart compromise base between Valle d’Itria and Salento, though the station sits well below the town.
Otranto and Adriatic Salento
Base · 1–3 days
Choose this side of Salento for Otranto’s fortified old town and cathedral, then work south through cliff roads, coves and clear water toward Castro and Santa Maria di Leuca. It is more rugged and scenic than the Ionian side, but needs a car in earnest.
Gallipoli and Ionian Salento
Base · 3 days
This is Salento’s sandy-beach coast: broad shallows around Porto Cesareo and a lively historic core in Gallipoli. Pick it when swimming, sunset and beach life matter more than secluded coves; in August, traffic and lidos are part of the deal.
Gargano and the Tremiti Islands
Base · 3 days
Puglia’s northern spur is greener, hillier and wilder than the rest of the region, with Vieste and Peschici as practical bases for beaches, boat trips and hiking. Add it only with several nights: it is too far from Bari or Lecce for a credible quick detour.
Trani, Andria and Castel del Monte
A quieter north-central circuit for Romanesque architecture and Frederick II history: Trani’s cathedral sits dramatically on the harbor, while Castel del Monte is the essential inland monument. It works best by car or with a planned tour, not as a beach add-on.
Taranto, Grottaglie and the Gravine
The less polished Ionian-and-ravine side rewards travelers who prefer archaeology, ceramics and cave-country to trulli photo stops. Taranto has major Magna Graecia material, Grottaglie has working ceramic workshops, and the Gravine deliver the region’s starkest landscapes.
Classic first visit with a car
8 daysBari (2 days) → Valle d’Itria (3 days) → Lecce (2 days) → Otranto and Adriatic Salento (1 day)
The sensible first-timer circuit: start with Bari’s real-city energy, then slow down in trulli country before moving south. Give Lecce its own time, then finish with a proper Adriatic coast day rather than trying to see both Salento coasts.
Plan this routeCar-free Puglia: cities, coast and food
7 daysBari (2 days) → Polignano a Mare and Monopoli (1 day) → Lecce (3 days) → Otranto and Adriatic Salento (1 day)
Built around the Bari–Lecce rail spine, not wishful thinking about buses to trulli towns. Use Monopoli and Polignano as an easy coastal interlude, make Lecce the southern base, and take one planned coastal excursion to Otranto.
Plan this routeGreatest hits without turning Salento into day trips
11 daysBari (2 days) → Valle d’Itria (3 days) → Lecce (3 days) → Otranto and Adriatic Salento (3 days)
For travelers who want Puglia’s core without wasting hours on constant unpacking. Bari, the Valle d’Itria and Lecce each get enough time to feel distinct; finishing on the Adriatic coast gives Salento the beach time it deserves.
Plan this routeDeep Puglia road trip: Gargano to Salento
14 daysBari (2 days) → Gargano and the Tremiti Islands (3 days) → Valle d’Itria (3 days) → Lecce (3 days) → Gallipoli and Ionian Salento (3 days)
The full-length route for drivers who want Puglia’s contrasting landscapes, not just white towns. Put the detached Gargano first, then work steadily south through inland Puglia to Lecce and the Ionian beaches. Keep one Gargano day flexible if Tremiti boat conditions matter.
