Tahiti
Base · 1–2 nights
Start here for Papeete’s market and food stalls, black-sand coast, waterfall valleys and the wild surf country of Tahiti Iti. It is busy and suburban around the airport, but has far more texture than a one-night airport layover suggests.
Moorea
Base · 3–4 nights
A short ferry ride from Tahiti, Moorea delivers sharp volcanic scenery, Cook’s and Opunohu bays, hikes, pineapple country and easy lagoon days without Bora Bora’s price tag. It is the most forgiving island for renting a car and setting your own pace.
Bora Bora
Base · 2–3 nights
Come for Mount Otemanu, the extraordinary lagoon and a properly indulgent motu-resort stay; nowhere does the classic Polynesian fantasy more convincingly. Keep it to around three full days unless the hotel itself is the trip, because the island is tiny, costly and resort-led.
Huahine
Base · 3 nights
Huahine is the Society Islands’ best antidote to resort monoculture: fertile, village-scale and good for marae sites, lagoon swimming and slow drives between Huahine Nui and Huahine Iti. Choose it over Bora Bora if you want pensions, space and local texture rather than polished convenience.
Raiatea and Taha’a
Base · 3 nights
These neighboring islands share a lagoon but serve different purposes: Raiatea is for Marae Taputapuātea, sailing and practical self-drive touring; Taha’a is for vanilla farms, motu stays and the Coral Garden. Pair them rather than treating Taha’a as a quick excursion, since its airport access runs through Raiatea and a boat transfer.
Rangiroa
Base · 4–5 nights
This vast Tuamotu atoll is about Tiputa Pass, drift dives, dolphins and blue-water scale—not roads, hikes or restaurant-hopping. It rewards divers willing to slow down and organize airport-to-motu transfers in advance.
Fakarava
Fakarava is a long, spare atoll with exceptional shark-rich pass diving and an even quieter, less built-up feel than Rangiroa. Give it at least three or four nights: distances along its narrow road and limited beds make a rushed stop pointless.
Tikehau
Choose Tikehau for pink-sand beaches, bird life, easy snorkeling and a smaller-scale Tuamotu stay with fewer decisions and fewer crowds. It is for travelers happy to trade choice and nightlife for stillness; book lodging before flights.
Nuku Hiva and Hiva Oa
Base · 8–9 nights
The Marquesas replace the Society Islands’ protected lagoons with cliffs, deep volcanic valleys, horses, tiki and marae sites, tattoo culture and rougher travel. Nuku Hiva is broader and more rugged; Hiva Oa is a useful base for art-history associations, but both need guided exploring and time for weather and slow roads.
Austral Islands
Rurutu, Tubuai and Raivavae are a deliberate second-trip choice: cooler, rural, thin on services and disconnected from the standard resort circuit. Go for whales and caves on Rurutu, or Raivavae’s remarkable lagoon, only with enough flexibility for limited flights and weather disruption.
Classic first visit: mountains, lagoon, one splurge
8-9 daysTahiti (1 night) → Moorea (4 nights) → Bora Bora (3 nights)
The sensible first trip, not the maximalist one. Tahiti gives you an arrival cushion and actual local life; Moorea handles driving, hikes and lagoon excursions; Bora Bora is the short, expensive finale. Add an overnight back on Tahiti if your international departure is tight—domestic flights and resort-boat transfers can eat most of a day.

12-14 daysTahiti (1 night) → Moorea (3 nights) → Huahine (3 nights) → Raiatea and Taha’a (3 nights) → Bora Bora (2 nights) → Tahiti (1-2 nights)
For travelers who want more than a sequence of resort pools. Huahine brings village scale and marae; Raiatea and Taha’a add Polynesian history, sailing, vanilla and coral gardens; Bora Bora is kept brief because its lagoon is the point, not its road loop. This is flight-heavy, so do not try to squeeze it into ten days.

14-16 daysTahiti (1 night) → Moorea (4 nights) → Rangiroa (4-5 nights) → Bora Bora (3 nights) → Tahiti (1-2 nights)
A strong mixed trip for divers and snorkelers who still want volcanic islands and a classic Bora Bora finish. Rangiroa is the choice for big-pass drift diving, dolphins and easier connections; swap in Fakarava for a quieter, more remote atoll and shark-rich passes. Keep at least 24 hours between the last scuba dive and flying, and treat every inter-island flight as a half-day commitment.

20-22 daysTahiti (2 nights) → Nuku Hiva and Hiva Oa (8-9 nights) → Tahiti (1 night) → Moorea (4 nights) → Raiatea and Taha’a (3 nights) → Tahiti (1-2 nights)
The route for travelers bored by the standard resort circuit. Give the Marquesas a real week-plus for valleys, archaeological sites, horses, guides and weather-delayed road days; they are a separate world, not a quick detour from Bora Bora. Moorea and Raiatea/Taha’a then provide an easier, lagoon-based counterpoint. The Tahiti breaks are deliberate buffers around the long Marquesas flights.
