1Avignon and the Vaucluse
Base · 3 days
The strongest first base for papal history, markets and rail connections, with enough nearby wine country and smaller towns to justify several nights. It gives you urban Provence without pretending every day needs a car.

2The Luberon
Base · 3 days
This is the hill-village Provence people picture: ochre, vineyards, markets and stone towns such as Gordes, Roussillon and Lourmarin. Rent a car and stay in a working town rather than attempting a frantic village checklist.

3Arles, the Alpilles and Camargue
Base · 2 days
Roman Arles anchors a rewarding mix of antiquity, photography, limestone villages and the Camargue’s wetlands, rice fields and ranching culture. Give the Camargue a full day or more; it is too spread out for a quick flamingo stop.

4Marseille and the Calanques
Base · 1–2 days
Choose Marseille for a real port city—rough edges, serious food, museums and boats—not for sanitized Provençal charm. It is the best launch point for the Calanques, Frioul and Château d’If.

5Aix-en-Provence and Sainte-Victoire
Base · 2 days
Aix is the polished, walkable counterweight to Marseille: fountains, markets, Cézanne and easy access to Sainte-Victoire country. It works well for a short, comfortable Provence stay, though it is not a coastal base.

6Hyères, Porquerolles and the Golden Islands
For clear water and a slower coast, base around Hyères and take the ferry to car-free Porquerolles. It is a better choice than Saint-Tropez if beaches, cycling and swimming matter more than the scene.

7Saint-Tropez Peninsula, Esterel and the western Riviera
A broad beach-and-boat stretch that includes Saint-Tropez, the red Esterel coast, Cannes and Antibes. Antibes is the practical pick for old-town atmosphere and beaches; Saint-Tropez only earns the detour if you actively want its glamour.

8Nice, Villefranche, Cap Ferrat and Menton
Base · 2–7 days
The Riviera’s best no-car corridor: Nice has enough city life for several days, while frequent trains make Villefranche, Cap Ferrat and Menton easy day trips. Use rail rather than romantic-looking but slow coastal roads.

9Nice Hinterland and Mercantour
The Mediterranean gives way abruptly to steep valleys, old mountain villages and Mercantour National Park. This is a proper mountain stay or driving leg, not an add-on to a rushed Riviera weekend.

10Verdon and Haute-Provence
Base · 2 days
Come for the Gorges du Verdon, Lac de Sainte-Croix and outdoor days that the coast cannot match—kayaking, hiking and cycling among huge limestone scenery. Stay at least two nights nearby; it is too distant for a token day trip from Nice or Avignon.

8 daysAvignon and the Vaucluse (3 days) → Arles, the Alpilles and Camargue (2 days) → Aix-en-Provence and Sainte-Victoire (2 days) → Marseille and the Calanques (1 day)
The best first-timer route if you want Roman and papal history, markets, one serious countryside stretch and a final hit of Marseille. Use a car for the rural middle, then hand it back before Marseille.

11 daysAvignon and the Vaucluse (3 days) → Arles, the Alpilles and Camargue (2 days) → Marseille and the Calanques (2 days) → Nice, Villefranche, Cap Ferrat and Menton (4 days)
This is the right way to combine western Provence and the Riviera without pretending they are next door. Keep the middle simple, take the train from Marseille to Nice, and use Nice as the no-car base for Riviera day trips.

Stay put rather than changing hotels along the coast. Base in Nice for museums, markets and westbound rail trips, then spend the latter part of the week in or around Menton for gardens, slower evenings and the Italian edge of the Riviera.

For travelers who genuinely want towns, village country, wetlands, a major port, gorge scenery and the Riviera. The Luberon and Verdon need dedicated overnights; treating either as a rushed detour is bad itinerary design.
