Rovaniemi
The practical first landing point for Santa Claus Village, Arktikum, straightforward airport access and a wide choice of winter activities. Use it for an easy first taste of Lapland, not for its scenery: this is a real small city with a commercial Christmas core.
Levi / Kittilä
Finland’s most polished all-purpose ski base: serious slopes, plentiful hotels and restaurants, and an airport close by. It works for mixed groups, but it is the least wilderness-feeling of the major Lapland resorts.
Ylläs, Pallas and Muonio
The western-Lapland choice when fells, long cross-country networks and national-park views matter more than nightlife. It is dispersed and car-dependent, but far more satisfying than Levi for travelers who actually want to be outside.
Saariselkä
A compact, functional resort beside Urho Kekkonen National Park, with trails, slopes and services close together. It is the cleanest no-car compromise between winter activities and genuinely expansive terrain.
Inari and Lake Inari
The strongest base for Sámi culture, lake country and a less packaged version of northern Lapland. Come for Siida, Sajos and time on or beside Lake Inari; do not come expecting nightlife or a dense resort village.
Pyhä–Luosto
A quieter, nature-first alternative to Rovaniemi, built around Pyhä-Luosto National Park, Isokuru gorge and old-growth pine forest. It has enough skiing and winter activity for a short break without pretending to be a big resort.
Kilpisjärvi / Enontekiö
Finland at its most mountain-like: Saana Fell, Malla, the Three Nations Border Point and routes toward Halti. This is a destination in its own right, not a day trip tacked onto a Levi or Rovaniemi stay.
Utsjoki and Nuorgam
Far-north river valleys and open uplands near Norway, with thin services and real distance from everything else. Go if remote roads, hiking, fishing or a Norway continuation are the point; skip it on a short Lapland trip.
Kemi–Tornio / Sea Lapland
The coastal outlier for sea ice, the Icebreaker Sampo and an easy Sweden crossover. It makes sense only when an icebreaker or Gulf of Bothnia setting is a priority, not for fells or the best aurora trip.
First winter visit: gateway, park and Sámi culture
7 nightsRovaniemi → Saariselkä → Inari and Lake Inari
The best first-timer split: Rovaniemi handles Santa and easy logistics, Saariselkä gives you proper winter terrain, and Inari adds culture and Lake Inari. It is much smarter than trying to cram in Levi as well.

7-8 nightsLevi / Kittilä → Ylläs, Pallas and Muonio
Start with reliable lift skiing, restaurants and rentals in Levi, then move west for cross-country trails and quieter fell country. This is the strongest winter route for active travelers, but a poor choice if Santa Claus Village is non-negotiable.
Plan this routeSummer northbound road trip
10-12 nightsRovaniemi → Pyhä–Luosto → Saariselkä → Inari and Lake Inari → Utsjoki and Nuorgam
A car route that earns its long distances in summer, when daylight makes evening hikes and transfers workable. It moves from accessible forest and gorges to national-park terrain, lake country and the genuinely remote far north.
Plan this routeWestern fells to the far northwest
14 nightsKemi–Tornio / Sea Lapland → Rovaniemi → Levi / Kittilä → Ylläs, Pallas and Muonio → Kilpisjärvi / Enontekiö
A full road trip for travelers who want to cover Lapland’s changing landscapes rather than sit in one resort. Give Kilpisjärvi several nights; on a shorter itinerary it becomes an exhausting windshield stop.
