Paphos
Base · 2–4 days
The best first base for Roman mosaics, the Tombs of the Kings and an easy harbor-and-ruins day. It is resort-oriented and spread out, but it earns its place because the west-coast day trips are excellent.
Akamas Peninsula, Polis and Latchi
Cyprus at its least manicured: walking, swimming coves, the Latchi harbor and the Blue Lagoon circuit. Go with a car and modest expectations about roads; this is not a place for improvised bus travel or guaranteed solitude in summer.
Limassol and the wine villages
Base · 1–2 days
The island's strongest base for proper urban evenings, dining and wine-country drives rather than resort confinement. Use it for Kourion, Kolossi and the Commandaria villages, but expect traffic and a more built-up coast.
Troodos Mountains
Base · 2–3 days
The necessary counterweight to the coast: painted churches, pine air, village tavernas, short hikes and wineries around Platres, Kakopetria, Kalopanagiotis and Omodos. Stay one or two nights rather than trying to tick it off from the beach in a rushed day trip.
Larnaca
Base · 2 days
A compact, lived-in arrival or departure stop with Saint Lazarus, the salt lake and Hala Sultan Tekke. It is more useful than spectacular: give it two nights, unless diving is the point of the trip.
Ayia Napa, Protaras and Cape Greco
Base · 3–4 days
This is where to come for Cyprus's clearest water and most reliable sand, from Fig Tree Bay to the Cape Greco coves. Choose Protaras for a calmer beach base; choose Ayia Napa only if nightlife and a busy resort scene are genuinely part of the plan.
Nicosia
Base · 2 days
The island's most revealing city, with Venetian walls, museums and the Green Line running through the old town. One full day can cover the essentials, but crossing into North Nicosia and lingering on both sides is more worthwhile than treating it as a checkpoint photo stop.
Kyrenia, North Nicosia and the north coast
Base · 2 days
A culturally distinct part of the island, combining North Nicosia's old lanes with Kyrenia's harbor, castle and mountain backdrop. It merits an overnight or two, not a frantic border excursion, but requires advance thought about entry and rental-car insurance.
Famagusta, Varosha and the Karpas Peninsula
The deeper north-of-island route: Gothic Famagusta, the unsettling modern history of Varosha, then sparsely developed beaches and villages on Karpas. It is rewarding but inefficient on a short first trip, especially with border and car logistics.
Classic first visit: west coast, wine country and an easy exit
8 daysPaphos (4 days) → Limassol and the wine villages (2 days) → Larnaca (2 days)
The sensible first-timer route: one substantial west-coast base for mosaics, Akamas and beach time, then Limassol for Kourion and wine villages, finishing in compact Larnaca. Paphos to Limassol is roughly 50–70 minutes by car; Limassol to Larnaca is about an hour. It avoids needless hotel churn while showing that Cyprus is more than a resort strip.

7 daysAyia Napa, Protaras and Cape Greco (4 days) → Paphos (3 days)
Start in Protaras for the island's best straightforward swimming—Cape Greco coves, Fig Tree Bay and, if wanted, an Ayia Napa night—then cross to Paphos for actual depth: Roman mosaics, Tombs of the Kings and Akamas. This is a real island-crossing transfer, not a quick hop: allow 2.5–3.5 hours with traffic and a worthwhile Kourion or Limassol lunch stop.

10 daysNicosia (2 days) → Troodos Mountains (3 days) → Limassol and the wine villages (2 days) → Paphos (3 days)
For travelers who want the island rather than a sun-lounger itinerary. Begin with divided Nicosia and time on both sides of the old city, then slow down in Troodos for painted churches, village meals and wineries. Continue via the wine country to Limassol and Kourion, then finish with Paphos archaeology and the rugged west. Rent a car: mountain roads are slow and buses make this route unnecessarily awkward.

A proper two-week circuit for travelers willing to deal with Cyprus's contrasts rather than flatten them into one beach holiday: Larnaca's lived-in southeast, Protaras's water, divided Nicosia, the culturally distinct north, mountain villages, Limassol's wine-country edge and Paphos's archaeological west. Keep the north as an overnight stay, not a rushed day trip, and sort border and rental-car coverage before committing. The mountain legs are slower than the coastal motorway map suggests.
