Savvy choices.
First visit? Stay in CBD.
For a first visit, the CBD puts the historic core, laneways, Chinatown, galleries, major stations and the Free Tram Zone within the simplest possible orbit. It is not the most soulful neighbourhood, but it minimizes transport friction and maximizes what can fit into a short stay.
Avoid sleeping near The immediate Flinders Street–Elizabeth Street intersection, The far western Docklands hotel zone, King Street and the western CBD party blocks, Acland Street and the loudest St Kilda nightlife blocks. It is central and generally manageable, but visible homelessness and drug/alcohol-related disturbances can make it an unpleasant hotel doorstep, particularly late at night.
