The lake-and-Andes landscape around Bariloche is the central visual experience of northern Patagonia, and this vast park is the framework for it. Do not try to ‘see the park’ in one outing: use it for one scenic drive, boat trip, or hike matched to the weather.
Pairs with: Cerro Catedral · Cerro Tronador
Bariloche’s signature mountain is a major ski center in winter and an accessible high-elevation viewpoint in the warmer months. It is worth doing for the lift-assisted views or a hike, but choose a clear day rather than treating it as an all-weather obligation.
Buy lift access in advance for weekends and peak ski-season dates; rentals and lessons also book up quickly in winter.
Pairs with: Nahuel Huapi National Park · Cerro Tronador
The glacier-clad massif and the thundering sounds of moving ice provide the most dramatic day trip from Bariloche. The long approach road makes this an all-day commitment, best for travelers who want scenery and short walks rather than another city excursion.
Expect to pay any applicable park-access fee at the entrance; confirm road conditions and seasonal vehicle restrictions before setting out.
Pairs with: Nahuel Huapi National Park · Cerro Catedral
This is the most distinctive stop on the Las Grutas coast: red-rock outcrops, broad sand, and clearer water than many visitors expect in Patagonia. Use it as a tide- and weather-dependent beach stop rather than a standalone destination, ideally combined with Las Grutas itself.
This relaxed mountain town offers a different Patagonia from Bariloche: artisan-market culture, small farms, breweries, and trail access beneath Piltriquitrón. Give it at least an overnight if you can, using the market and food scene as a base for a hike rather than rushing through on the highway.
Pairs with: Cajón del Azul
This blue-water gorge is one of the strongest hiking payoffs near El Bolsón and a better reason to linger in the area than the town center alone. It is a proper outing with variable trail conditions, so wear suitable footwear and treat it as a full or near-full day.
Register or reserve with the local refuge/trail system ahead in the high season; availability and access rules can change with weather.
