First visit? Stay in Tsim Sha Tsui.
Tsim Sha Tsui gives a first-time visitor the most walkable concentration of harbour views, museums, the Star Ferry, major hotel choices and direct MTR access. It is crowded and touristy, but those are manageable trade-offs for a short first stay.
Avoid sleeping near Chungking Mansions and Mirador Mansions, Tsim Sha Tsui, The Nathan Road budget-hotel strip between Tsim Sha Tsui and Mong Kok, Temple Street blocks in Jordan and Yau Ma Tei, Soho's busiest bar lanes. They are central, licensed options do exist, and they are generally well-patrolled, but rooms can be exceptionally tiny, noisy and variable in cleanliness. Read recent reviews, confirm the specific licensed property, and do not book solely on a headline price.
